Website Tonight Issues

November 17th, 2007

First, in now way is this a promotion for godaddy’s website tonight service as you will see by the time you finish reading today’s post. This week has been crazy and I was doing some small changes on a clients website in which I did not setup in the beginning. Needless today godaddy hooked him in and instead of my normal changes on my computer and then uploading them via ftp I was forced to login via firefox and make changes to their website.
Why was this so bad? First, unless you have all day to make simple changes than it’s not for you!! Yes, yes, I can see how great website tonights purpose must be for someone who has never touched a computer and doesn’t know anything, but hey in that case give them a mac! (haha) Next, they limit you on so many features which most people need. Guess what? You cant put javascript on your pages, nope godaddy doesn’t allow that. Nope, you can’t use any special scripts or html either. No, you cant upload something via ftp how dare you! No, you can’t access your email by imap are you nuts godaddy’s support says!
Finally, the last reason why never to use godaddy’s website tonight service and instead to hire me or someone else anyone for that matter is that your stuck with them forever. If you do get a website done or do your own and they come to realization that their service is horrible you really don’t own the website. You will not be able to transfer it to any other server nor download a backup copy of it. Now thats what I call a contract!

Wait, what do you mean you can’t transfer it? I’m new to the “website creating thing” but does that mean I can’t take my address to another hosting company even if I am willing to make a new website?

Do you know how to create a table and place it either above or below the navigation bar that is on the far right?

this is so true! i’m so frustrated, I cannot make little changes because of the templates that’s protected. if i make a new page, the original template shows up and there’s no way to change the whole page design! no ftp info also and does not allow uploads online! huh!

you can get your FTP id when publishing your page with website tonight it will take a while for the site to publish and the ip address needed for FTP is listed.

I’ve used Website Tonight tons of times for sites. You can insert javascript, you have to go to insert—->script and put it in there. This can be placed either in the header “properties” section, or anywhere in the body of the site. You are right, FTP is restricted on website tonight, but if you ever want to move the site to regular hosting or anywhere else, there’s a free program called httrack. It can be found at httrack.com. Type in your URL and it will download the whole site, images and all, and place it in a folder on your desktop for you. I’ve used this method multiple times to copy a website tonight site.

@godaddyuser: Do you know of any way to alter the templates in Website Tonight? I have tried editing the CSS file to no avail. Thanks very much.

I know your posting is from many, many months ago and this tread is all but dead, but I had to share my thoughts.

I am a part-time web designer and I was having major problems downloading a site to my local machine that was originally hosted through websitetonight.com. I goggled my issue and found this site.

The software godaddyuser recommends above (HTTrack) is the PERFECT tool for getting the job done. As of 2/12/10, httrack.com is still active and updated.

Thank you for the tip. I’m definitely going to keep this one in my arsenal of tools.
